Smileys atau emoticons

Smileys merupakan simbol kecil yang disusun dari karakter ASCII untuk mengungkapkan perasaan dan emosi dalam pesan yang dikirim. Untuk mengetahui arti smileys adalah dengan cara melihat sambil memiringkan kepala anda ke kiri. Smileys muncul dalam korespondensi lewat email ketika dibutuhkan pengungkapan emosi seperti sarkasme, keceriaan, dan perasaan lain yang tersirat dalam pesan yang dikirim. Oleh karena itu smileys disebut juga dengan emoticons.

Tanpa smileys, pernyataan sederhana dengan mudah akan salah diinterpretasikan. Contoh:

Sialan kamu! :-)

Dengan menyertakan smileys, pernyataan di atas bisa diartikan bercanda.

Menurut sejarah, Scott Fahlman adalah orang yang pertama kali menggunakan smileys dalam email, pesan di Bulettin Board System (BBS) dan newsgroup.
